Ascending Through Purgatory: WOLFANG Turn Dante's Vision Into a Symphonic Metal Odyssey
Vicenza, Italy's WOLFANG have unveiled "Purgatory," a bilingual symphonic metal epic that pulls its narrative straight from the pages of Dante's Divina Commedia. It's an ambitious concept, and the band delivers it with the kind of cinematic weight fans of Nightwish, Rhapsody of Fire, and Stratovarius will instantly recognize.
The song follows a soul trapped in the "middle realm," Purgatory itself, caught between judgment and salvation, climbing toward the promise of Paradise. WOLFANG structure the track as a literal ascent: verses build in tension as the protagonist confronts the seven sins standing between him and redemption, while the choruses soar upward, mirroring the "stairway to the heavenly kingdom" described in the lyrics.
What sets "Purgatory" apart is its bilingual structure. English verses carry the narrative forward, while Italian passages, "Nel loco dove il tempo non tiene alcuna età" ("In the place where time holds no age"), arrive like sacred interludes, grounding the song's mythology in its Italian roots and giving the track an almost liturgical gravity.
Symphonic layers swell around soaring vocal lines, painting the mountain of redemption, the burning purification of sin, and the final dive into "God's wisdom fountain" with orchestral scope. It's a song built for widescreen listening, the kind of track that rewards a full, uninterrupted spin.
For listeners drawn to symphonic metal that treats its source material with genuine reverence rather than surface-level references, "Purgatory" is a rewarding climb from darkness into light.

Biography
Formed in 2010 in Montebello Vicentino, near Vicenza, Italy, WolFang is a Power Metal project built on epic, high-impact songwriting fused with folk and experimental textures. From their earliest days, the band committed to original material, bringing their sound to the stage for the first time in 2012.
Two years later, WolFang claimed the Ferrock award at the Vicenza Rock Contest, sharing the bill with respected names in Italian metal including Furor Gallico, Folkstone, and Arcana Opera. That same year saw the release of their self-titled EP, WolFang, laying the groundwork for their debut full-length, Bonfire, which followed in 2017 to a strong reception.
A new chapter began in 2021 when longtime frontman Alessio Guarda departed and vocalist Silvia Violet Balbo stepped into the fold, bringing a fresh creative voice to the band's songwriting. Under this new lineup, WolFang released three singles in 2023, "Paper Castle," "La Gilda dei Ladri," and "Beyond the End" each marking a new stage in the band's continued evolution.
Their latest single, "Purgatory," carries that evolution further still. Freely inspired by Dante's Divina Commedia, the bilingual track, sung in both English and Italian, follows a soul trapped in the middle realm, climbing through purification and the weight of the seven sins toward the promise of Paradise. It's a sweeping, symphonic addition to the band's catalogue, and a clear sign of the ambition driving WolFang's next chapter.
