The Ineffectuals Traded Their Amps for Suspenders and "Like A Child" Is Somehow Their Most Unhinged Song Yet

Just when you think you've figured out The Ineffectuals, they show up wearing suspenders, dust off a 1940s dance hall arrangement, and somehow make it work. "Like a Child" leans into the theatrical charm of vintage jazz with brushed shuffled drums, a buoyant saxophone section, and enough old-time swing to feel like it escaped a forgotten radio broadcast. Fans of Paul McCartney's affectionate nods to pre-rock pop will feel right at home, while the band's roots in the drive of Foo Fighters, the raw edge of The Screaming Trees, and the melodic instincts of Better Than Ezra still simmer underneath the surface.
Of course, this is still The Ineffectuals, so the sunny facade hides something a bit darker. The song follows a man whose childlike optimism and unconventional outlook leave him branded as "crazy" until even he begins to wonder if everyone else might be right. The result is a gleefully off-kilter contrast: a tune that practically begs you to dance while quietly asking who gets to decide what's normal. It's charming, unsettling, and just self-aware enough to grin at the audience while the walls slowly close in.
Portland's own Ineffectuals prove once again that the most interesting alt-rock isn't the loudest, it's the one that makes you question everything while you're still tapping your foot.
