Fickle Hill, the alt rock project of James Rossillo out of Irvine, CA, returns with an acoustic reimagining of "Mirrors," out now on SODEH Records. Where the original mapped the architecture of a fractured identity, this version does something quieter and more unsettling: it sits in the room with you and doesn't look away.

The track opens on a simple guitar and a voice that sounds like it's been carrying something heavy for a long time. No production buffer. No safety net. Just the song and the weight it's built around, the slow, creeping recognition that you have become the people you grew up watching.

Fans of Linkin Park, Chevelle, and Deftones will find the DNA here, emotional precision, lyrical density, a refusal to resolve tension cheaply, but "Mirrors" operates in its own interior space. The fret buzz stays. The grain of the voice stays. The slight imperfections that most artists sand down are the ones Rossillo keeps, because they're the ones that tell the truth.

Lyrically, this is some of Fickle Hill's most ambitious writing. The images accumulate like rings in a tree trunk: old sneakers that no longer fit, notebooks full of expired dreams, a niece who learns his words before he learns silence. "I pass down wounds with decorative ribbons / Calling it wisdom while tightening prisons." These aren't metaphors reaching for meaning, they're observations that have already hit before you've finished parsing them.

The central question the track circles, "If I break the circle who falls through the gap / If I hold the circle who lives in the trap" never gets answered. That's the point. "Mirrors" isn't about resolution. It's about the exact moment of recognition: the one where you look in the glass and see something older than yourself looking back, and you have to decide, right there, what you're going to do with that.
